How to support a loved one who is in therapy?

Your friend or family member just told you they are in therapy. You want to help them feel supported but what can you do? It all depends on the loved ones needs. Some folks want to talk about it and others don’t. Some folks might want to share their experiences and others are guarded.

Ask your loved one how you can best support them in this.

Some things to keep in mind:

  1. Just because your child/friend/loved one is in therapy does not mean they are broken.

  2. Healing is not linear. Some days will be better than others.

  3. Ask your loved one what you can do, better yet- offer options when your loved one is struggling.

EX: Are you able to come over and bring them groceries? Are you willing to come over and watch a show without having a long conversation? Are you willing to meet them for a walk and support? Offer ideas and see what they gravitate towards.

I hope these ideas help. Take good care!
